Leeds chase record fee to fill goalkeeping void with James Trafford

Leeds United have set for a club‑record signing of England international goalkeeper James Trafford, a deal reported by journalist David Ornstein. Manager Daniel Farke’s side will pay £40 million plus add‑ons to bring the 23‑year‑old to Elland Road, where he is expected to challenge for the number‑one shirt.

Leeds’ need for a new first‑choice keeper is acute after two senior goalkeepers departed in the 2025‑26 season. Karl Darlow left on a free transfer for Manchester United and Illan Meslier moved to Arsenal, leaving only Lucas Perri between the posts.

The departure of Darlow and Meslier has left Leeds very light in the goalkeeping department, with Perri’s inconsistent performances prompting the club to pursue a proven talent. The number‑one shirt is therefore up for grabs, making Trafford’s arrival a strategic priority.

The Yorkshire club’s £40 million fee, plus add‑ons, will eclipse the previous record of £35.5 million paid for Georginio Rutter in January 2023. This makes the Trafford deal the most expensive in Leeds United’s history.

Trafford arrives from Manchester City after a season at Burnley, where he earned England caps and featured at the FIFA World Cup this summer. He made just 17 appearances across all competitions for City before deciding to seek regular minutes.

Manchester City had re‑signed the academy graduate with the intention of making him a starter, but the arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma a few weeks later relegated him to the bench for most of the 2025‑26 campaign. Consequently, Trafford spent the majority of that season on the bench.

Leeds have already been active in this transfer window, adding defender Tarik Muharemovic and forward Harry Wilson to the squad, signalling a broader rebuild under Farke.
