Kortrijk eye stability as Chile’s Mehssatou prepares return

🇧🇪 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·

In the bustling streets of Liège, Chilean midfielder Nayel Mehssatou prepares to depart Standard Liege after just one season, with Sudinfo reporting his imminent return to Kortrijk. The versatile player featured in 31 matches for Standard and will re‑join the Belgian side he left in January 2022.

Mehssatou originally left Kortrijk after their relegation from the Pro League two seasons ago, signing for Standard Liege on a free transfer. The move marked his first departure from the Belgian side since that drop.

He first joined Kortrijk in January 2022 from Anderlecht, making 108 appearances and scoring five goals. During that spell he shifted from full‑back to an all‑action midfielder while still covering the defensive role when needed.

At Standard Liege, Mehssatou featured in 31 games but rarely started, spending most of his time on the bench. This limited role contrasts sharply with the regular minutes he enjoyed at Kortrijk.

His return is seen as a boost for Kortrijk as they aim to avoid an immediate drop back to the second tier and cement a stable Pro League position. The club values his versatility as central to those ambitions.

Mehssatou is expected to join Chelsea youngster Harrison Murray-Campbell among Kortrijk’s summer signings. The pairing adds depth and youthful energy to the squad.

Ben Jackson highlighted the transfer, underscoring its significance for both clubs. Both sides view the move as mutually beneficial.
