Michael Reiziger emerges as frontrunner to replace Ronald Koeman as Dutch national team coach

🇳🇱 By 4AllFootball ·

The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) has signalled that former international Michael Reiziger is now the leading candidate to succeed Ronald Koeman as head coach of the senior Netherlands side. The decision follows an intensive, hours‑long session held on the sidelines of the Johan Cruijff Schaal match in Eindhoven, where Reiziger met with technical director Nigel de Jong and technical commissioner Clarence Seedorf.

The late‑evening meeting was prompted by the recent withdrawal of Arne Slot from the shortlist, a move that forced the KNVB to accelerate its search for a new manager. Sources close to the federation confirmed that Reiziger, de Jong and Seedorf discussed the future direction of Dutch football in detail, covering everything from youth development pathways to tactical philosophy.

“Michael Reiziger is still a top candidate to become the new coach of the Dutch national team,” a KNVB insider told journalists after the session. “He met the most senior delegation – Nigel de Jong and Clarence Seedorf – just before the Johan Cruijff Schaal match.”

Reiziger’s recent work with the Jong Oranje (U‑21) side has been highlighted as a key advantage. Under his guidance the squad has produced a wave of emerging talents, a model that analysts compare to the successful Spanish coach Luis de la Fuente, who rose through the national youth pipeline.

Former Dutch icon Louis van Gaal has also been mentioned as a possible comeback, but insiders suggest the momentum now clearly favors Reiziger. “Van Gaal is open to a return, but the momentum is clearly with Reiziger,” the report added.

Football analyst Hans Kraaij Jr. emphasized the strategic shift, noting that the KNVB appears to be following a Spanish blueprint. “Spain used Luis de la Fuente, who never was a star player but knows the youth pipeline inside out. I think Nigel de Jong sees a similar path for Michael Reiziger, especially after the withdrawal of the ‘Famous Three,’” he said.

If appointed, Reiziger would inherit a national team in transition, eager to reclaim its former European and world‑stage glory. The KNVB is expected to make an official announcement within the coming weeks, confirming whether the former defender will take the helm of Oranje.
