KNVB blocks FIFA president's €17.5m World Cup sale on principle

While FIFA president Gianni Infantino seeks to cash in his World Cup interests for €17.5 million, the Dutch football association (KNVB) has drawn a firm line, insisting that principle outweighs profit. The clash pits a lucrative proposal against a governing body’s commitment to good governance and transparency.

FIFA-voorzitter Gianni Infantino announced a proposal to sell his WK‑belangen for €17.5 million. The plan, presented by FIFA leadership, aims to generate revenue from the upcoming tournament.

On Wednesday the KNVB issued a statement calling the proposal a ‘very worrying development’. The federation said it would study the official draft carefully and that the interests of football, good governance and transparency must always lead.

Infantino pitches World Cup sale as UEFA and Pro League chief balk

KNVB chairman Frank Paauw confirmed the opposition in a text message to journalist Edwin Schoon. He wrote that an emergency online meeting with all 55 UEFA members would be held the following day.

Paauw added: “The money is much less important for us than for some other associations. That may sound decadent, but it’s about principle.” He also said the proposal crossed a line that should not be crossed.

UEFA also voiced strong opposition to the plan, aligning with the KNVB’s concerns.

The journalist noted that this is a much clearer stance than previously and that it signals a tense week ahead for European football governance.
