Jamie Carragher names only two Premier League title contenders

Jamie Carragher’s latest assessment narrows the 2026‑27 Premier League title race to just two clubs, Arsenal and Manchester City, signalling a sharply limited contest for the crown. The former Liverpool and England icon made the claim on the Football Ramble podcast, emphasizing that no other fan base can realistically expect to lift the trophy next May.

During the interview Carragher explained, “Where we are right now, and we know there’s still a month to go transfer‑wise, I can only see Arsenal or City,” underscoring his belief that the remaining clubs lack the depth to challenge the duo. He also noted that Arsenal secured the iconic trophy for the first time in over 20 years last season, positioning them as favourites heading into the campaign.

Manchester City, meanwhile, face a managerial overhaul with Enzo Maresca tasked with replacing Pep Guardiola at the Etihad. Carragher praised Maresca’s tactical acumen, recalling his impact at Chelsea and stating, “I’m a fan of Maresca in terms of what he does on the pitch… I think he’s very capable at the level he’s coaching at.”

Chelsea have already spent over £290 million this summer, yet Carragher dismissed their chances, focusing instead on the two clubs he believes can truly win. He also highlighted the potential influence of Rodri’s future, saying, “If Rodri stays or goes that could be a huge factor,” while maintaining that City remain the stronger side.

When asked about Liverpool’s prospects after a disappointing 2025‑26 campaign, Carragher ruled them out, stating, “Right now I don’t think Liverpool are equipped to be thinking about a title.” He added that the club’s recent performance leaves them far from contention.

Carragher also gave Manchester United little hope, remarking, “Manchester United won’t win the league,” and expressed concern over the club’s focus on big‑name signings, linking it to his own worries about Liverpool.
