Gundogan linked to Montpellier takeover by GSS fund

Former Manchester City midfielder Ilkay GUNDOGAN is involved in a prospective takeover of Ligue 2 club Montpellier HSC by British investment fund GSS. GSS is in advanced talks with club owner Laurent Nicollin for a potential purchase.

The interest from a then-unnamed British buyer surfaced in April. Nicollin had previously called for investment in the club during the 2024/25 season. He sent a ten-page document to major French investment banks, stating, “We are throwing a hook into the sea.”

Nicollin clarified he does not wish to fully sell the club but acknowledged pragmatism due to the situation. He conceded he may become a minority shareholder. “Our fall has to be less painful at the end of the year,” he added.

Montpellier HSC were relegated to Ligue 2 for the 2025/26 season and failed to return to Ligue 1. They missed the playoffs, alongside Stade de Reims, who were also relegated that season.

An agreement between GSS and Nicollin is drawing closer, though it remains unclear if it will be a full takeover or a minority share purchase. GUNDOGAN is part of the GSS-led bid, with Daniel Karbassiyoon, formerly of Arsenal, Burnley, and Ipswich Town, also involved in the consortium.

The potential deal follows Nicollin’s public push for external investment amid financial and sporting challenges at Montpellier HSC.
