Gillingham shore up goalkeeping with Southampton loan of Ollie Wright

🇬🇧

Gillingham have moved to reinforce their squad ahead of the new campaign, adding a goalkeeper to a roster that is still hunting six further signings, as reported by club director Dobson, while also completing the signing of Gordon after a Motherwell departure.

The loan of Ollie Wright arrives as part of Gillingham’s broader recruitment drive, signalling a focus on strengthening the defensive spine. Wright joins the club on a season‑long loan from Southampton, a Premier League side that have developed him since 2012.

The 23‑year‑old goalkeeper has never featured for Southampton’s first team, having progressed through the club’s age‑grade academy since 2012. His experience in senior football comes from loan spells with National League outfits Yeovil Town and Solihull Moors.

Most recently, Wright spent the 2025‑26 season with fellow League Two side Accrington Stanley. He appeared in 43 of the club’s 46 league matches last season and kept 12 clean sheets across 47 games.

Reflecting on his style, Wright told the club website, "I’d like to say I am quite commanding, coming for crosses and taking the pressure off the back line." The statement underscores the confidence he brings to Gillingham’s back‑line.

All the deals were finalised in July 2026, confirming Wright’s move before the start of the campaign. With the goalkeeper now on board, Gillingham still aim to secure six additional signings, a target set by Dobson, which could shape competition for the starting role.

Wright’s record of 12 clean sheets in 47 appearances demonstrates his ability to organise a defence. If he replicates that form at Priestfield Stadium, he could become the first‑choice keeper for the Gills this season.
