France’s offer rattles Feyenoord’s Gjivai Zechiël, coach says

Gjivai Zechiël, the 22‑year‑old midfielder at Feyenoord, received an offer from a French club that, according to head coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst, can affect a young player’s mindset. The coach said the proposal is "completely normal for a young player" and that he understands its impact.

Journalist Martijn Krabbendam noted that Zechiël has struggled with the transfer complications surrounding Lille, highlighting the emotional strain the midfielder has endured. Krabbendam, writing for VI, emphasized the coach’s empathy for the player’s situation.

Lille had shown interest in Zechiël over the past weeks, but Feyenoord intervened and kept the player at De Kuip. The Dutch side’s decision effectively halted any move to the French club.

Last season Zechiël spent time on loan at FC Utrecht, gaining valuable playing experience before returning to Feyenoord. His loan spell is referenced as part of his recent development.

On Sunday Zechiël delivered a strong performance against Rayo Vallecano, earning praise for his contribution on the pitch. The match demonstrated his readiness for top‑level competition.

Van Bronckhorst will sit with the "still young" midfielder again and does not rule out an improved contract from the club. He said, "I can understand that it does affect you when you receive an offer from a big club in France; that’s completely normal for a young player."

Zechiël’s current contract runs until mid‑2028, but the coach hinted at the possibility of a multi‑year extension. The option for a better deal remains on the table, according to the manager.

The coach added, "That option exists, of course. Ultimately the board must decide what is best for the club and for the future. If it comes with a longer contract, I think that’s a viable path. I just don’t know whether Zechiël is open to it himself," stressing the need for clarity for all parties.
