Fortuna Sittard's Dutch gamble: Ole Romeny arrives on loan
Fortuna Sittard have secured Ole Romeny on a season‑long loan from Oxford United, with an option to buy, as confirmed by Getty Images. The 26‑year‑old Indonesia international, who arrived at Oxford in January 2025 from FC Utrecht, will spend the campaign in the Netherlands.
Fortuna Sittard’s recruitment strategy favours Dutch‑born talent, and Romeny’s Dutch upbringing fits that profile. His previous spells with Dutch clubs reinforce the club’s domestic focus.
Romeny began his career with NEC Nijmegen before featuring for Willem II and Emmen. Those experiences in the Dutch league system underline his familiarity with the playing style Fortuna employs.
At Oxford United, Romeny made 32 appearances and scored once, but could not prevent the club’s drop to League One. The relegation highlighted a difficult English season for the side.
He becomes the second Oxford United departure after Nik Prelec left on Friday, following the club’s announcement of an EFL transfer embargo this summer. The embargo has forced the English side to trim its squad.
The loan gives Fortuna Sittard a ready‑made striker for the season while retaining the option to sign him permanently. For Oxford United, the move eases squad size pressures and keeps a future sale possibility open.
