FIFA Forward Enterprise stalls as confederations push back

By 4AllFootball ·

On Friday night (31), FIFA announced that the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) project, championed by President Gianni Infantino, has collapsed before it ever materialised, raising questions about the future of World Cup commercial rights and the promised support for Member Associations in need.

The enterprise would have operated as a company handling the commercial rights of the World Cup, with the intention of selling those rights to private investors. This structure aimed to generate revenue streams beyond the traditional FIFA model.

Infantino said the FFE was designed to "further strengthen our FIFA Member Associations and our sport around the world, especially in countries where support is most needed." The proposal emphasized a global development focus, linking commercial gains to assistance for weaker football nations.

From the outset, the plan encountered resistance from UEFA, Concacaf and the AFC, each expressing concerns about the project's direction. Their opposition signalled a lack of immediate confederation support for the commercial overhaul.

CONMEBOL, the only confederation that had not yet taken a formal stance, later spoke out on the initiative. Its delayed response underscored the broader hesitancy among the global governing bodies.

Before the official announcement, The Athletic reported that internal meetings were being held at FIFA to discuss the project's viability. Those discussions reflected growing uncertainty within the organisation.

Infantino explained, "It became clear that the project created divisions of such a nature that, regardless of the level of support, they are no longer in line with the objective set out in the first place." He concluded that the proposal would not go ahead and said he intends to reconvene all stakeholders in the coming days and weeks to pursue football development, particularly in the nations most in need of support.
