FC Twente eye €1.5 million Mats Deijl as Van Rooij replacement

FC Twente are reportedly eyeing a move for right‑back Mats Deijl from Feyenoord, with the Dutch defender’s market value hovering around €1.5 million. The former Go Ahead Eagles player, who struggled to cement a place in Rotterdam last season, could depart the club this summer.

FootballTransfers lists Deijl as one of the leading candidates to succeed Bart van Rooij at FC Twente. Van Rooij is currently linked with Ajax, PSV and even his former club Feyenoord, prompting Twente to consider a direct replacement to shore up their defensive options.

According to the same source, a swap deal could see Bart van Rooij move the other way while Deijl joins Twente, with additional millions potentially added to balance the transaction. This structure would address both clubs’ needs and reflect Deijl’s €1.5 million valuation.

The outlet also mentions Cherrion Valerius of NAC Breda and Sean Klaiber of Danish side Brøndby as alternative targets for the Van Rooij vacancy. Both players, like Deijl, are Dutch‑based and well‑known, and they would be evaluated by FC Twente’s director Erik ten Hag, who is said to be overseeing the scouting process.

Twente midfielder Daan Rots dismissed rumours of Ajax negotiations concerning Van Rooij on Wednesday, stating, “It is simply not true. I read that he had spoken with Ajax, but he did not. He is my partner on the right side, so I would know. He said it was not correct. To my knowledge his agent also did not talk to Ajax.”

Coach John van den Brom added, “I asked Bart again today and there is nothing happening. It is always annoying that these kinds of reports appear before a match. It is just a pity, but it is what it is. So far it has been relatively quiet and the media need to throw these stories into the world. I can say little more about it.”

Earlier this window FC Twente secured Bas Kuipers, a left‑back who spent the previous season on loan at Arouca FC in Portugal, from Go Ahead Eagles. The club now appears poised to add Deijl as a right‑back, completing a full‑back pairing sourced from the same former Eagle squad.
