Exclusive Derby County eye World Cup centre‑back in transfer raid

One‑year option in his contract makes 22‑year‑old Finn Surman a prime target for Derby County as the club plot a transfer raid on the World Cup‑exposed centre‑back. The Rams, fresh from an eighth‑place finish in 2025‑26 under John Eustace, are eager to build on that progress and chase a play‑off spot.

Derby’s ambitions are underpinned by a new investment deal from Saudi sports mogul Turki Alalshikh, which could fund the club’s next moves in the summer market. Despite the upcoming EFL Cup round one, the club has only added three players so far, including former Liverpool midfielder Bobby Clark on a permanent deal after a loan spell.

The target is Finn Surman, the 22‑year‑old centre‑back who featured for New Zealand at the FIFA World Cup this summer. Surman helped the All Whites earn a point against Iran before defeats to Egypt and Belgium ended their campaign.

Surman currently plays for MLS side Portland Timbers, joining them in 2024 after a spell with Wellington Phoenix. He has logged 58 appearances for the Timbers and featured in all 18 league games this season, while also earning 22 caps for New Zealand.

His contract with Portland runs out at the end of the year, with a one‑year option favouring the club, meaning Derby could sign him without a transfer fee if the option is not exercised. Born in Cardiff in 2003 but raised in New Zealand, Surman holds UK nationality, so Derby will not need a GBE work permit or an ESC slot.

The main obstacle may be competition from other clubs, as several British teams have shown interest in the defender. Nevertheless, Derby’s recent investment and league position give them a strong platform to secure the deal.
