Everton’s defensive gamble: White’s fitness or Spence’s readiness?

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·

Everton have added Arsenal right-back Ben White to their summer shortlist, but Tottenham Hotspur’s Djed Spence is also under consideration. The Toffees are weighing options as they look to bolster their defensive options ahead of the new season.

Guela Doue has also drawn interest from Everton, though the Strasbourg defender is reportedly viewed as too expensive. This has shifted the club’s focus toward the two Premier League options, White and Spence, as more viable targets.

White’s future remains unsettled due to injury concerns. Gary Jacob reported that White’s situation is “clouded by injury,” adding that he is unlikely to accept a drop in level this summer. Interest from Everton and Crystal Palace has been noted, but his fitness remains a key factor in any potential move.

Arsenal confirmed in May that White suffered a significant medial knee ligament injury and are targeting his return for pre-season preparations. Clubs may wait to see White back on the pitch before firming up offers, though any bids submitted before then may not meet Arsenal’s valuation.

Spence, meanwhile, offers Everton a ready-made Premier League option. His profile aligns with the club’s need for defensive reinforcement, though no fee has been publicly discussed for either player.

The uncertainty surrounding White’s fitness and Doue’s cost could leave Everton prioritising Spence as the more immediate solution. The club’s defensive reshuffle may hinge on medical assessments and Arsenal’s willingness to negotiate.

Gary Jacob added that White is unlikely to accept a move that represents a step down in level, complicating Everton’s pursuit. The Toffees must balance medical risks with competitive ambition as they finalise their defensive plans.
