Vandenhaute left the presidency of RSC Anderlecht and its board in 2025 after popular pressure forced his departure, marking the end of a turbulent era for the mauve and white club.

Antwerp, often dubbed the Grand Ancien, faces a decisive crossroads; Paul Gheysens must repay €6.5 million to the investment fund Fasanara by Tuesday 14 July or be compelled to sell shares.

Two routes are under consideration: a partial sale to a foreign investor or a full transfer of shares to a consortium led by Vandenhaute together with former captain Toby Alderweireld, a move that would see Alderweireld return to Bosuil and delight supporters.

According to the information, no agreement had been reached on Tuesday, but negotiations are expected to conclude on Wednesday.

The consortium’s proposal promises a sensational takeover of the Grand Ancien, yet doubts linger over whether Vandenhaute’s past at RSC Anderlecht will inspire confidence among stakeholders.

Since Antwerp’s title win in 2023, Gheysens has grappled with severe financial difficulties that halted the club’s push for the summit of Belgian football, placing the club’s continuity in jeopardy.
