Burnley turn to Belgian Nicky Hayen after Craig Bellamy talks collapse
Burnley have announced the appointment of Belgian Nicky Hayen as their new head coach, signing a three‑year contract at Turf Moor. The club turned to Hayen after talks to bring back Craig Bellamy collapsed.
Hayen arrives from Pro League side Genk, where he most recently guided the team to a seventh‑placed finish. His résumé also includes a 2024 league title and a subsequent cup triumph with Club Brugge before his dismissal in December.
Burnley chairman Alan Pace said, “This is a considered appointment that fits how we intend to run the club. We have backed a clear footballing plan within a sustainable model and Nicky has the support to deliver it.” He added that the focus now is a strong season and a return to the Premier League on solid foundations.
Hayen takes over from Scott Parker, who left in April after the Clarets' relegation from the Premier League. The Championship club hopes the new leadership will reverse the decline.
Addressing the supporters, Hayen said, “I’m pleased to be joining a club with real history and supporters who care deeply about it.” He acknowledged that many fans may not know him yet and pledged to change that perception.
Craig Bellamy, who was heavily linked with a return (Getty), will remain Wales manager, having overseen 20 matches with eight wins, six draws and six defeats, and will lead the Welsh national team in Euro 2028 qualification across the UK and Ireland. Bellamy previously served as Vincent Kompany’s assistant at Burnley between 2022 and 2024 after working together at Manchester City‑linked Anderlecht, and his Wales side were knocked out of the World Cup play‑offs by Bosnia and Herzegovina.
