Benitez Premier League hopes clash with turbulent Greek exit

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·

Rafael Benitez, the Spanish veteran of the Old Guard, says his Premier League ambitions remain alive even as his turbulent Greek exit looms after a May dismissal by Panathinaikos. The contrast pits his hunger for England’s top flight against a season that ended in seventh place in Greece.

Benitez’s résumé boasts the 2005 Champions League triumph with Liverpool, followed by an FA Cup win and a Europa League victory while at Chelsea. He also guided Newcastle United back to the Premier League by clinching the Championship title in the 2016/17 season, cementing his status among his generation’s most experienced managers.

Reflecting on his brief stint in Greece, Benitez blamed a lack of clarity and patience at Panathinaikos. He said the original target was to finish in the top four, yet the team concluded the campaign in seventh place.

He added, “We were the best team in the second part of the league. We were doing so well that they changed the targets.” Benitez noted that a derby loss against Olympiacos triggered panic and a shift in the club’s objectives.

The Spaniard praised the fans and the club president but warned that Greek clubs often change coaches and lack patience. “The way that they work here in Greece, they change their coaches all the time. And they are not patient,” he observed.

When asked about a Premier League return, Benitez admitted openness but observed that English clubs now favour young, progressive managers. “There are not too many teams in England, in the Premier League, that will say, ‘OK, we’ll go for him’,” he said.

He also said he is considering offers from Serie A or any league around Europe, and even a national‑team project if the right challenge appears. “We are ready for another challenge…any league that if you can stay around Europe will be fine,” he added.

Benitez’s statements leave his next move uncertain, as clubs weigh his extensive European pedigree against the growing preference for younger appointments. A potential Premier League appointment remains a tantalising prospect for the seasoned Spaniard.
