Anderlecht's Greek test in Europa League third round

🇧🇪 By 4AllFootball ·

Anderlecht have cleared the first hurdle of the Europa League qualifiers, securing a 3‑1 victory over Hammarby in the second half. The Belgian side now faces Greek club PAOK in the third qualifying round, with the first leg scheduled for Thursday 6 August in Thessaloniki.

Anderlecht’s 3‑1 win over Hammarby was described as convincing in the second half. The Belgian side earned the victory with a deserved performance.

PAOK finished third in the Greek league last season, behind champions AEK Athens and Olympiakos. Their domestic ranking makes them a formidable opponent for Anderlecht.

The Toumba Stadium in Thessaloniki is known for its hostile atmosphere, promising a tough encounter for the visitors. The venue’s reputation adds an extra layer of difficulty to the tie.

The first leg will be played on Thursday 6 August in Greece, while the return match is set for Thursday 13 August at Lotto Park. Both fixtures are part of the third qualifying round of the Europa League.

If Anderlecht overcomes the Greek hurdle, they will advance to the play‑offs – the final qualifying round – which take place on 20 and 27 August. The opponents for those ties will be determined on the following Monday. It means that a defeat in the play‑offs would end Anderlecht’s European campaign.

Sven Van Londersele, sport journalist at HLN30, noted that a Swedish drama was avoided and suggested setting as a Google favourite. He highlighted the significance of the upcoming matches for the Belgian side.
