AFC praises FIFA's retreat from Forward Enterprise plan
The Aziatische voetbalbond (AFC) welcomed FIFA’s decision today to withdraw the disputed FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) proposal, calling the move a step toward unity within world football. The AFC said the reversal addresses concerns raised by continental bodies and underscores the need for transparent, collaborative governance.
AFC-voorzitter Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa stressed that major decisions about football’s future must be taken only through consultation and transparency. He said the governing bodies must work together to protect the sport’s integrity.
FIFA had intended to house commercial activities in a newly created company and to sell a portion of its shares to external investors. The plan was named FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE).
The proposal met strong opposition from UEFA, AFC and Concacaf, who voiced concerns about its impact on existing governance structures. Their collective resistance contributed to FIFA’s reconsideration.
FIFA drops Forward Enterprise as confederations reject World Cup stake
Following the backlash, FIFA announced the withdrawal of the FIFA-plan and the abandonment of the Forward Enterprise project. The decision was welcomed by the Asian confederation.
“The future of world football must always be shaped by good consultation, joint dialogue and respect for the existing governance structures of our sport,” Shaikh Salman said. He described the withdrawal as an important step forward.
According to the AFC president, the confederation remains open to new initiatives that aid football development and enjoy broad support. “The AFC stands ready to back any project that strengthens unity and benefits all parties,” he added.
Shaikh Salman also praised the patience, solidarity and unity shown by AFC member associations during the debate over the FIFA-plan. The withdrawal temporarily eases tensions that had risen between FIFA and several continental bodies, including those led by Gianni Infantino.
