AC Milan mourns iconic defender Franco Baresi, at 66

AC Milan and the Italian football community have lost one of their greatest icons as former captain Franco Baresi died at the age of 66. The veteran defender had been battling a serious illness for an extended period, prompting an outpouring of grief across the sport.

Met Milan he played his entire professional career, appearing in 719 official matches between 1977 and 1997. His loyalty made him synonymous with the Rossoneri.

During that period he became the face of a golden generation, winning six Serie A titles, three European Cups, two Intercontinental Cups and four Italian Super Cups. He shared the defence with Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard.
