A year on, Liverpool unveils 'Forever 20' statue for Jota

🇬🇧

Outside Anfield, Liverpool unveiled a new statue on the one‑year anniversary of the tragic car accident that claimed former forward Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva. Designed by sculptor Emma Rodgers, the piece is titled ‘Forever 20’ and stands as a lasting tribute.

Liverpool described the monument as “a permanent symbol of love and remembrance”, underscoring its intent to keep the players’ memory alive for supporters and future generations.

The statue incorporates the lyrics of the chant fans traditionally sang for Jota, while its base is carved from Portuguese stone sourced from Gondomar, the region of the brothers’ birth. A PlayStation controller is also embedded, reflecting Jota’s passion for video games.

Jota’s death has left a palpable mark on Liverpool’s season and resonated throughout the football world. The Portugal national team honoured him at the World Cup with special bracelets, and last season a dedicated spot outside Anfield regularly received flowers and Liverpool scarves.

Before a November clash with Liverpool, PSV’s squad visited the site to pay tribute, laying flowers as a sign of respect. With the new ‘Forever 20’ statue, the club now offers a permanent place of remembrance outside the stadium.

The ceremony took place on a Friday, marking exactly one year since the crash that took the lives of Jota and Silva. The artwork features several personal references to Jota, celebrating both his footballing talent and his character off the pitch.
