£77m fee cements Manchester City’s defensive ambition with Gvardiol

Manchester City paid a record £77 million for Croatia defender Josko Gvardiol and has locked him into a new five‑year contract with an option for a sixth season, committing his future to the English champions. The fee underlines the club’s ambition to rebuild its defence.

Gvardiol becomes the second City defender to secure his future this week, following Abdukodir Khusanov who also agreed a contract extension. Both deals are aimed at stabilising the back line after recent departures.

The defensive rebuild has accelerated after the exits of John Stones and Nathan Ake. Retaining top talent is seen as essential for maintaining competitiveness in the Premier League.

Gvardiol arrived from RB Leipzig in 2023 for a record £77 million, making him the most expensive defender in City’s history. He was later honoured with the club’s player‑of‑the‑year award for the 2024‑25 season.

Real Madrid showed interest in the Croatian international, but Gvardiol said, “As soon as City wanted to renew my contract, I knew it was what I wanted.” His decision reflects confidence in the club’s project.

City’s director of football Hugo Viana praised the defender, stating, “Josko is already one of the best defenders in the world. Manchester City are committed to keeping our best talent, which is why we are so pleased this contract has been agreed.”

The renewal highlights the intensifying competition among elite clubs for premier defenders, as illustrated by Real Madrid’s reported interest. Securing Gvardiol on a long‑term deal demonstrates City’s willingness to invest heavily to protect their defensive core.
