£4.2 million option fee puts Mahamadou Sangare in Europe’s loan market
Manchester City have signalled they are ready to loan 19‑year‑old striker Mahamadou Sangare, with a permanent‑purchase option priced below £4.2 million, just a year after his arrival from Paris Saint‑Germain. The club hopes the figure will attract a senior‑level destination for the prolific U21 forward.
Sangare finished last season with a tally of 15 goals in 30 appearances across all competitions for City’s U21 side, a record that placed him among the most clinical finishers in the City Football Group network.
Interest has already emerged from French Ligue 1 side Nantes, Ligue 1 club Nice and German Bundesliga outfit Freiburg, while clubs across France, Germany and Italy have also been reported to be monitoring the teenager.
Director of football Hugo Viana is assessing the most appropriate next step, noting that a loan‑with‑option structure reflects the belief that regular senior football will aid Sangare’s development more than another academy campaign.
The modest permanent‑option valuation is described as a pragmatic acknowledgement that Sangare’s market value remains untested at senior level, and the structure is intended to incentivise clubs to act now rather than wait for a rise in price.
According to journalist Mirko Di Natale, Italian clubs could view the striker as an attractive opportunity, suggesting the pool of potential destinations extends beyond the initially named clubs.
The loan‑with‑option model is a pattern City has employed for young talents whose readiness for top‑flight football requires a proving‑ground, and the accessible price tag is expected to broaden the field of suitors across Europe.
New City manager Enzo Maresca is reviewing how the academy pathway, including Sangare’s potential move, fits into the broader squad rebuild underway at the Etihad Stadium.
