Morocco and Algeria secure spots for Brazil 2027 Women's World Cup

Morocco and Algeria have qualified for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, becoming the 16th and 17th nations to secure their places after winning their African Nations Cup quarter‑final matches on Saturday in Rabat and elsewhere. Their victories lock in the final two African slots for the Copa do Mundo Feminina Brasil‑2027.

Marrocos, the Anfitriã of the Copa Africana de Nações, defeated South Sul Africa 2 – 1 in Rabat, earning its second appearance at the Mundial after reaching the round of 16 in 2023, where it was eliminated by França. The Seleção marroquina’s win also marked the nation’s 16th qualification for the tournament.

The standout of the Moroccan triumph was right‑back Hanane Ait El Haj, who supplied the assist to Sakina Ouzraoui for the opening goal and later converted a penalty for the second strike. Hanane’s contribution highlighted the depth of the Marrocos squad in this edition of women’s football.

South Africa’s lone goal was scored by Thembi Kgatlana, providing a brief moment of hope before the final whistle. Despite Kgatlana’s effort, the South African Seleção could not overturn the deficit.

Also on Saturday, Argélia secured its first ever Women’s World Cup berth by beating Côte d’Ivoire 2 – 1 in the opening quarter‑final of the African competition. The victory guarantees Argélia a place at the Copa do Mundo Feminina Brasil‑2027 alongside Marrocos.

The Copa do Mundo Feminina Brasil‑2027 now has 16 qualified teams, including the host Brasil, African representatives Marrocos and Argélia, European sides Espanha, Alemanha, França and Dinamarca, South American Argentina and Colômbia, Oceania’s Nova Zelândia, and six Asian nations – Austrália, China, Coreia do Norte, Coreia do Sul, Filipinas and Japão. This list reflects the global reach of women’s football.

Two more direct African slots will be decided in the remaining quarter‑finals on Sunday, when Camarões face Nigéria and Malawi meets Gana. The losers of those matches will still have a chance via the international repescagem for the Mundial.

The Copa Africana de Nações, which will be staged in Marrocos from 26 July to 16 August, offers four direct qualifications and two spots for the inter‑continental repescagem. The tournament’s outcome will complete the African allocation for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
