Liverpool Dismisses Arne Slot After Turbulent Season

🇳🇱 31 May 2026

Dutch manager Arne Slot was dismissed by Liverpool FC a week after the season's final match. The club announced the termination following a troubled second campaign that failed to meet expectations.

Slot had described the team's decline in November as "almost ridiculous", highlighting an unprecedented spiral of poor results. The former success‑driven coach admitted he was confronting challenges he had rarely experienced before.

On 3 July, Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother were killed in a traffic accident, prompting worldwide mourning. Slot refused to cite the tragedy as a justification for the team's underperformance, though the loss deeply affected the squad.

Liverpool invested €483 million in the summer, signing Florian Wirtz for €125 million, Hugo Ekitiké for €95 million and Alexander Isak for €145 million. All three acquisitions were intended to bolster a title‑defending side but failed to deliver the expected impact. The spending marked the highest transfer outlays in the club's recent history.

Liverpool lost the Community Shield to Crystal Palace on penalties, then secured five consecutive league wins before a pattern of narrow victories emerged. A subsequent 1‑4 home defeat to PSV in the Champions League and a nine‑loss run in twelve games intensified scrutiny on Slot. A public dispute with Mohamed Salah, who was benched after a dip from 34 goals and 23 assists the previous season, added further pressure.

Liverpool issued a statement that a change was necessary to move the club forward while acknowledging Slot's contributions. The club expressed confidence that Slot will find success elsewhere.
