Brian Brobbey pledges full support for grieving Cody Gakpo

Oranje striker Brian Brobbey said he will stand by teammate Cody Gakpo as the Dutch squad continues its World Cup campaign after Gakpo’s personal tragedy. Gakpo is coping with the loss of his unborn son Elijah together with his girlfriend Noa van der Bij, a situation the team is rallying around. Brobbey explained, “We tried to be there for him, and if he needs us we are there, if he needs space we give it as well.” He added that the entire group, from coaches to players, is making an effort to support Gakpo during this difficult period. Brobbey continued, “It is nice that he stays with us; he is a very important player for the team.” He believes the squad has managed to move forward together despite the emotional challenge. The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) said it sympathises with Cody Gakpo, his partner Noa van der Bij, and their son Samuël. The federation confirmed it is aware of the private tragedy and is offering support where possible. The KNVB also stressed that it respects the family’s privacy and will not provide further details about the situation. Any future information will be shared only by the family themselves. With their teammate’s resolve intact, the Netherlands team aims to maintain focus on the remaining World Cup matches. The collective backing underscores the squad’s unity as they pursue the tournament.
