World Cup

Courtois crossed the pitch to honour Lukaku’s strike after Belgium win

Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois explained why he ran onto the field after Belgium’s 5‑1 victory over New Zealand, which secured the Red Devils’ place in the World Cup round of 16. Speaking to RT BF, Courtois said he wanted to celebrate the final goal with his teammates, especially Romelu Lukaku. Courtois was the first "Diable rouge" to react publicly after the qualification. He gave his comments in an interview with RT BF following the match. "It was the victory we expected. New Zealand wanted to play, have the ball, press high. But if we play well we get chances, and that’s what happened," Courtois said, adding that the team had a post‑match penalty cancelled and a missed opportunity against Croatia in 2022. He crossed the pitch to join Alexis Saelemaekers in celebrating the last goal, noting that Saelemaekers was partly at fault for the conceded goal. The gesture highlighted the team's unity after the win. "I knew after that goal we were first in the group, so I wanted to celebrate with the group and especially Romelu, who scored a beautiful goal and an assist. I’m happy for him," Courtois explained. The goalkeeper appeared more decisive and smiling, and he expressed hope that the Red Devils will continue on this positive trajectory.
