Barcelona’s €2.5m gamble on Ecuadorian prospect Caicedo takes shape

Barcelona have finalised a loan agreement with Ecuadorian teenager Josue Caicedo from Liga de Quito, including a €2.5 million conditional purchase option. The 18-year-old will initially join Barça Atlètic in Segunda RFEF as part of the club’s strategy of integrating highly rated overseas youngsters into the first-team pathway.

The deal includes a mandatory clause that converts the €2.5 million option into a binding purchase if Caicedo makes four official appearances for the Barcelona first team during his loan spell. Liga de Quito have also negotiated a 20% sell-on clause, ensuring a share of any future transfer proceeds if Barcelona later sell the player.

Caicedo is expected to complete the formalities within hours and will link up with Juliano Belletti’s Barça Atlètic squad. His immediate goal is to continue his development and impress Hansi Flick sufficiently to earn senior-team opportunities.

Standing at 1.83 metres, Caicedo is regarded as one of Ecuador’s brightest young prospects. Known for his pace, athleticism and ability to beat defenders in one-on-one situations, he began as a left winger before transitioning into a left-back or wing-back, a position that has drawn European interest.

Despite his age, Caicedo has already made seven appearances in Ecuador’s top flight for Liga de Quito. He also featured in the Copa Libertadores on 26 May, playing in Liga de Quito’s 3-2 victory over Bolivia’s Always Ready.

Brazilian manager Tiago Nunes, a compatriot of Belletti, has given the teenager early senior-team exposure, reflecting confidence in his potential. Barcelona’s technical staff see his attacking qualities and long-term upside as aligning with the club’s approach to developing young full-backs.

Caicedo is not the only Liga de Quito academy player Barcelona have monitored. The club have also tracked Ederson Castillo, a 17-year-old defensive midfielder who spent a week on trial at Barcelona’s Ciutat Esportiva in January, training with Pol Planas’ Juvenil A side.

Unlike Caicedo’s transfer, Castillo’s move appears less likely at this stage. Barcelona’s technical staff reportedly believe his profile as a holding midfielder diverges from the positional traits traditionally developed at La Masia, complicating a potential deal despite ongoing interest.
