Luis Suarez defends Lamine Yamal’s rise while lauding Flick’s Barcelona

🇩🇪

In a Mundo Deportivo interview, former FC Barcelona striker Luis Suarez praised teenage winger Lamine Yamal as one of the FIFA World Cup’s standout performers and defended him against Lionel Messi comparisons, while also commending Barcelona coach Hansi Flick’s leadership and the club’s high‑press identity.

Suarez recalled Spain’s opening World Cup match against Cape Verde, noting that the team enjoyed plenty of possession but generated few clear‑cut chances, apart from a first‑half effort by Ferran Torres. He added that Yamal’s introduction immediately shifted focus, with teammates seeking his ball and defenders paying extra attention.

In the second group game versus Saudi Arabia, Suarez observed that Yamal is “going from strength to strength” in the tournament. He said the teenager is aware of the spotlight and that “a lot of eyes are on him”. Suarez praised Yamal’s ability to handle the responsibility well.

When asked whether Yamal reminds him of Lionel Messi, Suarez responded that “comparisons are odious”. He acknowledged that both players are left‑footed and possess quality, but stressed they are completely different and hoped Yamal reaches at least the same level.

Suarez turned his praise to coach Hansi Flick, describing his leadership as “impressive”. He noted that critics often claim Barcelona cannot cope with intensity, high press, or a high defensive line, yet the team continues to deliver under Flick’s philosophy. Suarez highlighted Flick’s honesty with players, explaining why some may not feature in a match.

Suarez concluded that Barcelona is entering another ambitious season under Flick, with Yamal attracting worldwide attention. He emphasized that Flick’s approachable style and understanding of individual and collective needs are vital for a club like Barcelona.
