York City reinforce defence with ex‑Fleetwood centre‑back Zeh Medley

York City have signed 25‑year‑old centre‑back Zeh Medley on a free transfer after his contract with Fleetwood Town expired, adding a defender who made 21 League Two appearances for the Fishermen last season and nine on loan at Bromley, the eventual champions.

Medley spent the second half of the 2025‑26 campaign on loan at Bromley, featuring in nine matches as the club secured the League Two title. His contribution helped Bromley clinch promotion, a milestone for the Kent side.

The defender began his development in the Chelsea academy before moving to Arsenal, where he debuted in a 2018 Europa League tie against Vorskla Poltava. He recorded three first‑team appearances for the Gunners before embarking on loan spells.

Those loan spells included periods at Gillingham and Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock, providing him with regular senior football. Both experiences broadened his defensive skill set across English and Scottish leagues.

In 2021, Medley signed for Belgian Pro League club KV Oostende, where he spent three seasons. His time in Belgium added continental experience to his résumé.

He returned to England with Fleetwood Town, but the club announced he would be among seven players departing after their contracts expired this summer. Fleetwood had relied on his 21 League Two appearances during the 2025‑26 season, when the team finished 15th.

York City’s acquisition marks their fourth signing since achieving promotion to the English Football League for the first time in a decade. The club aims to strengthen its backline ahead of the upcoming season.

Fans can follow York City updates, including the Medley signing, on BBC Sounds. The platform provides audio content ranging from match previews to player interviews.
