Pedri's masterclass secures Spain's spot, avoids suspension

Spain clinched a 1‑0 win over Uruguay in their FIFA World Cup group‑stage finale, with Barcelona midfielder Pedri steering the play before being substituted in the 59th minute. The victory placed Spain at the top of the group and kept Pedri, who was on a yellow card, available for the knockout round.

The match unfolded at a frantic pace, marked by heavy challenges and heated moments. Uruguay adopted a physical approach from the outset, forcing Spain to battle throughout the encounter.

Agustin Canobbio was involved in several controversial incidents, first escaping punishment after a strong tackle on Pedri and later delivering a dangerous challenge on Pau Cubarsi. The Uruguayan’s night ended with a red card after further misconduct.

Pedri’s influence remained evident despite the aggression, dictating Spain’s attacks with 43 passes completed from 63 touches. In 59 minutes he recorded one key pass, won seven duels, made four defensive actions and maintained a perfect success rate with his long balls.

Carrying a yellow card, Pedri risked a suspension that would have ruled him out of Spain’s Round of 32 match. By staying disciplined and being withdrawn in the 59th minute, he avoided a second booking and left the field without incident.

The narrow win secured top spot for Spain and ensured they head into the Round of 32 with their midfield orchestrator fully available. Coach Luis de la Fuente can now plan his knockout‑stage lineup without the concern of losing Pedri to suspension.

A photograph by David Ramos captured Pedri’s calm composure as he left the pitch. Spain’s progression to the knockout phase now hinges on maintaining the same intensity as they aim for further success.
