Netherlands women fall short of 2027 World Cup after Poland win

🇳🇱 10 June 2026

Netherlands women secured a 3-1 victory against Poland in the 2027 Women's World Cup qualifiers but remain in play-off contention after France’s parallel win. France topped the group and qualified directly.

Netherlands finished second and must survive two play-off rounds in autumn to secure qualification. The first-round draw on June 24 will pair them with a League C opponent such as Lithuania, Hungary, or Kazakhstan.

The match, played at Heracles Almelo’s stadium, followed a Friday loss to Ireland that stripped Netherlands of direct control over their qualifying fate. Manager Arjan Veurink’s side took early initiative, creating multiple chances before Esmee Brugts’ cross was converted by Wieke Kaptein in the 25th minute.

Poland struggled without star forward Ewa Pajor, absent from the starting lineup. Netherlands capitalized, doubling the lead through Romée Leuchter in the 60th minute. Leuchter’s sixth international goal came from a first-time finish after a cross from the right.

Liz Rijsbergen sealed the win late, adding a third goal after a PSV combination play. Poland pulled one back via Ewelina Kamczyk from the penalty spot, awarded after Damaris Egurrola’s foul.
