Graeme Souness warns Barcelona’s €70m gamble on Anthony Gordon

Barcelona have completed the €70 million signing of England forward Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United, a move announced in the summer that now faces scrutiny after his muted displays for England in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The winger’s lack of impact against Croatia and Ghana has amplified doubts among supporters.

The €70 million fee underscores a significant investment for Barcelona given their current economic constraints. Fans who once celebrated the arrival of the Newcastle star are now expressing concern over the financial risk.

Graeme Souness criticised the signing, stating, “Barcelona will have watched their new £70m winger Anthony Gordon in England’s opening group games and wondered what they have bought.” He added that a conservative style would not survive long in Catalonia.

Souness also drew a direct comparison with Lamine Yamal, calling the Spaniard the benchmark for Barcelona wingers. He questioned Gordon’s standard, noting, “He’s certainly not Bukayo Saka’s standard.”

Despite the criticism, Gordon still has time to recover before England’s final group match against Panama, a fixture seen as a relatively easier outing. The upcoming game offers the striker a chance to regain form on the world stage.

Beyond the Panama encounter, Gordon is expected to feature prominently for England in the knockout stage, providing ample opportunity to silence his detractors. His role remains central to the Three Lions’ attacking plans.
