World Cup

Zlatko Dalic's departure paves way for Slaven Bilic's comeback

Zlatko Dalic, 59, will step down as Croatia's head coach after the World Cup, where Croatia were eliminated 3-2 by Portugal in the round of 32; he will not renew his expiring contract and will confirm his resignation by Wednesday.

Dalic has been in charge of the Croatian national team since 2017. He becomes the eighth coach to leave or be dismissed among the 48 nations that began the World Cup in June. His contract is set to expire, and he will not seek an extension.

Slaven Bilic and Ivica Olic had been long‑listed as potential successors after the tournament. Bilic, who previously managed Croatia from 2006 to 2012, will take over the role. Olic remains in the nomination pool but will not be appointed immediately.

Informal talks with players about Bilic's possible return were described as very positive. These discussions took place before the World Cup. The positive tone suggests a smooth transition once Dalic steps down.

In Croatia, Dalic is regarded as the most successful coach in the nation's football history. He guided the side to the 2018 World Cup final. He also oversaw the victory in the 2022 third‑place match.

Bilic's appointment will be formalised following Dalic's resignation. The Croatian Football Federation will then look ahead to future competitions under his leadership.
