Young warns United: Conte's arrival would be a disaster
Wednesday 21 October 2026, former England international Ashley Young said live on ‘Overlap Daily’ that Antonio Conte’s arrival on the Manchester United bench would be a disaster, warning the Old Trafford club to consider the choice cautiously.
Young shared his experience with Conte during the 2020/21 season at Inter, where the two won the Serie A title together. He recalls the intensive training sessions, describing them as the real highlights of a team that wanted to dominate Italian football. The memory was recounted live, with video clips broadcast on various channels.
Young’s warning to United
Manchester United is currently struggling under Michael Carrick’s management, with inconsistent results and a defence that struggles to handle the opponent’s press. Young warned the club, citing coverage by Sportmediaset and the magazine XXL, which published photos (Photo) of the most critical moments. His warning was placed in the News section of the channel.
The defender described Conte’s training sessions as “eleven against eleven”, with meetings that could last three or four hours after a defeat. He added that the players might not like these methods, especially ahead of competitions such as the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa Italiana. The comment was placed in the program’s Cup column, with references to Serie A and the Coppa Italia.
Conte’s project
Conte, 57, told The Athletic that he wishes to bring a great club that has lost its winning identity back to the top. The Apulian coach linked his approach to a sporting lifestyle philosophy, where league titles are born from careful management of the technical area. He also compared the tactics to the precision of Formula 1. His project is also inspired by the world of sport.
Manchester United hasn’t won the league since 2013, the year Sir Alex Ferguson retired after more than two decades in charge of the club. Young recalled that fans are demanding answers and suggested consulting the Help, FAQ and Info sections to understand internal policies, also citing the guidelines on Cookies and Policy. Training now includes exercises inspired by tennis and the drive of other sports.
If Conte were to take charge, his Premier League experience with Chelsea and Tottenham could represent a highly anticipated return to England. However, as Young warned, the impact of such a demanding coach could turn the season into a genuine disaster for the club.
