Yann Sommer returns to San Siro after Inter successor's blunder

In the harsh light of the San Siro, 37‑year‑old Yann Sommer was seen back in goal after a long break – and he celebrated, because a mistake by his successor at Inter Milan decided the game in his favour.

Bruges surprises on the second Champions‑League matchday

On the second matchday of the Champions League, K.V. Bruges surprisingly overcame Inter Milan. The Belgian champions collected the first three points, while Inter finished the game without any points.

The win came thanks to a misstep by Josep Martinez, the 28‑year‑old successor to Sommer at Inter. After just over an hour, Martinez unnecessarily left his box far out, after which Bruges attacker Carlos Forbs played the ball past him and Nicolò Tresoldi scored the 2:1.

Match progression and further surprises

In the first half, Tresoldi already put the 1:0 ahead from a foul penalty (30’). Inter equalised shortly afterwards through Lautaro Martinez, but the goal was disallowed for off‑side; the 1:1 stood shortly before the break.

After the renewed deficit due to Martinez’s wayward pass, Inter showed clear weakness. Tresoldi completed his hat‑trick with the 3:4 (74’) and put Bruges in the lead. Inter, however, responded, and Lautaro Martinez brought his team to 2:3 (81’).

A counter‑attack by the Belgians led to 4:2 through Romeo Vermant, before Ange‑Yoann Bonnys’ strike in the 93rd minute brought the final score to 4:3.

The round‑up of the other games also points to a surprise in Stavanger, while the next Champions League duel on 21 October sees Inter Milan face Ukrainian champions Shakhtar Donetsk. On the same day, Bruges host Lens at home.
