Xavi Zirkzee chooses the Netherlands, adjustment decides the squad

On Saturday evening, Xavi Hernández stood at the press conference for the Nations League match against Serbia and explained why he called up Joshua Zirkzee to the Dutch national team, also known as Orange. The atmosphere was tense, as the coach had to find a replacement after an unexpected injury.

The striker of Manchester United received the call after Brian Brobbey had to withdraw due to a hamstring injury. With Zirkzee's arrival, he filled the void in the attack. His club status made the choice logical for the national coach.

‘He has qualities that fit well with our system and our philosophy,’ said Xavi Hernández. ‘He is a good link‑up player and can be very important. I like him a lot as a player.’

The call meant that Zirkzee was preferred over established strikers such as Memphis Depay and Wout Weghorst, who were still in the World Cup squad. Together with Brobbey, Donyell Malen and Mexx Meerdink, there now appears to be a line of five attackers above the old top.

Choice based on adaptability

‘Yes, he can adapt better now. That’s what we select for,’ the national coach replied briefly. ‘Our number 9 must have a good connection with the rest and must be technically strong. In that, I really like Zirkzee.’

Xavi indicated that a new list will be released in November, which could see Depay and Weghorst regain preference. The current squad therefore remains temporary, dependent on form and availability.

Furthermore, Hernández reported that defender Jurriën Timber, who was previously not fully fit, is now available for the match against Serbia. Lutsharel Geertruida remains absent; he is returning to PSV after injury.
