Xavi’s Dutch debut: can he fix the World Cup fallout?

Xavi's managerial track record

Xavi began his managerial career at Al‑Sadd, the club where he ended his playing days. During his tenure he secured the league title and multiple domestic cups. Those achievements established his reputation in the Middle East.

In 2021 he returned to Barcelona to assume the head‑coach role. In his first full season he guided the side to the La Liga title. The triumph was celebrated as a swift restoration of the club’s domestic dominance.

The following seasons failed to replicate that success, and Xavi departed Barcelona in 2024. Since leaving, he has remained without a club. The Netherlands appointment ends a two‑year period of unemployment.

No foreign coach has ever won the World Cup, and only one has captured the Euros – Germany’s Otto Rehhagel with Greece in 2004. The Netherlands have previously benefited from foreign guidance, notably Ernst Happel who led them to the 1978 World Cup final, a match they lost 3‑1 to Argentina after extra time.

Xavi’s immediate task is to assemble a squad for the Nations League. His first match will be against Germany on 24 September. Subsequent fixtures include games versus Greece and Serbia.
