Xavi chooses Zirkzee over Weghorst after Brobbey's injury

While Brian Brobbey of the Netherlands, after his injury against Germany in the Nations League, immediately saw Wout Weghorst called up as a replacement, national team coach Xavi Hernández unexpectedly chose the hardly used Manchester United striker Joshua Zirkzee for the upcoming match against Serbia, despite him rarely getting playing minutes at Old Trafford.

Zirkzee’s limited minutes

The forward who was still present at the 2024 European Championship in Germany then disappeared from view. Joshua Zirkzee almost never gets playing minutes at Old Trafford with Manchester United, which limits his club experience.

At the press conference for the match against Serbia, the Spaniard Xavi Hernández explained: “He has qualities that fit well with our system and our philosophy. He is a good link‑up point and can be very important. I like him as a player very much.”

When Wout Weghorst’s name was mentioned again, Xavi wondered why not him or Memphis Depay. “He can adapt better now. Our number 9 must have a good connection with the rest and be technically strong. In that, I really like Zirkzee,” said the national coach.

According to Xavi, the decision has no long‑term impact: “In November there will be another list,” he said, indicating that the squad can still change.

Finally, Xavi confirmed that Arsenal defender Jurriën Timber is available for the clash with Serbia: “He can play tomorrow, just like the other players who are there.”
