Xavi Hernandez reports Frenkie de Jong's progress in Zeist

On the morning of September 22, 2026, the Netherlands national team coach, Xavi Hernandez, led a training session in Zeist as the squad prepares for the UEFA Nations League matches. During the day, the coach provided the latest update on the recovery of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, who suffered a knee injury at the World Cup.

Injury update

De Jong is out with a knee injury sustained during the World Cup, which has prevented him from playing for Barcelona throughout the current season. Xavi Hernandez has also had to leave him out of his first call‑up with the Dutch national team for the same reason.

"I had spoken with him, we have a very good relationship. He is happy with the way his recovery is progressing and feels very positive," Xavi Hernandez told Catalunya Radio.

"And we will see, we will see. I think the key point will be after this break, precisely to see if he rejoins the group and can play at 100 % again," added the Dutch coach.

De Jong has trained with the ball at Barcelona and shows evident progress, although it is still unknown when he will be available again for the side coached by Hansi Flick.

The official photograph, titled “Netherlands OUT”, comes from ANP/AFP and is distributed by Getty Images, showing the Dutch squad in the same session.

His full recovery will be decisive for the Netherlands' plans in the Nations League, where the team aims to consolidate its position after the absence of the key midfielder.
