Nations League
Xavi and Summerville: contrast between pressure and promise for the Netherlands
Xavi Hernández held a press conference at the Toumba Stadium in Thessaloniki, where he outlined the challenges facing the Netherlands national team ahead of the match against Greece, aiming to snatch the top spot in Group A2 of the Nations League. The coach highlighted the difficulty of beating a rival that has won its two games, and praised winger Crysencio Summerville, describing him as a potential top‑level player.
Defensive challenge for the Netherlands
The Dutch side arrives at the fixture with several absences: after losing Brian Brobbey against Germany and Cody Gakpo against Serbia, today Jan Paul van Hecke's injury was confirmed. The Tottenham centre‑back suffered a heavy blow to his foot in Belgrade, left training and returned to London for assessment. “He’s a fighter and tried to push on, but the pain is too intense. It’s a shame,” Xavi lamented.
Given this situation, the coach did not rule out that captain Virgil van Dijk could cover the role. “He can play on the right. I know it’s not his favourite position, but he can help the team. If we need someone in another position, the team comes first,” Hernández assured.

Summerville, the offensive gamble
During the same conference, Xavi praised Summerville, highlighting his ability to make a difference and play in any attacking position. “He has the potential and the abilities to become a top‑level player,” said the former Barcelona player and coach.
Summerville, who joined Saudi club Al Hilal in July from West Ham for €64.5 million, replied that, although there are differences, he shares the same philosophy as Xavi, whom he compares to his predecessor Ronald Koeman. “I feel good; the coach is very open and honest with everyone. I think that shows on the pitch,” the winger said.
Netherlands under pressure: Greek golden generation full of confidence
The Greek opponent comes into the fixture with two wins, including the surprising 1‑0 victory over Germany under Jürgen Klopp in Augsburg. “We must not fear Greece, but we must respect them. They are playing well and have a lot of talent, especially up front. It will be a tough match,” Xavi reiterated, also noting that the match schedule does not allow further adjustments.
