World Cup disappointment meets Forlan’s rebuilding mission for Uruguay

The Uruguayan Football Association announced on Thursday that former striker Diego Forlan will take charge of both the senior national team and the Under‑20 side, stepping in after Marcelo Bielsa’s tenure ended following Uruguay’s winless group‑stage exit at the World Cup.

Uruguay opened the World Cup with a 1‑1 draw against Saudi Arabia, setting a cautious tone. A second group match produced a 2‑2 stalemate with debutants Cape Verde, keeping hopes alive but exposing defensive frailties. The final group game ended in a 1‑0 defeat to Spain, sealing elimination.

Spain later lifted the tournament, beating Argentina 1‑0 in the final, while Uruguay returned home weeks after the campaign without a win.

Marcelo Bielsa’s contract expired after the tournament, and he acknowledged in a press conference that he could not mould the squad into a World Cup‑ready side. Local media reported tensions between Bielsa and some squad members during the competition.

Diego Forlan’s appointment covers both the senior national team and the Under‑20 side, signalling a unified rebuilding strategy. The dual role underscores the contrast between recent disappointment and fresh leadership.

Forlan earned 112 caps for Uruguay and was part of the 2011 Copa América‑winning squad. He retired from playing in 2019 after spells at Manchester United, Atletico Madrid, Villarreal, Inter Milan and Japan’s Cerezo Osaka.

Since hanging up his boots, Forlan has managed Uruguayan clubs Penarol and Atenas, gaining domestic coaching experience. These roles prepared him for the national assignments ahead.

He will oversee friendly fixtures scheduled between September and November, beginning immediately with the Under‑20 squad. The upcoming matches will provide a platform to integrate his vision across both age groups.
