Wirtz's strike fuels Klopp's maiden victory for Germany

Jürgen Klopp celebrated his first victory as Germany manager when the side beat Serbia 2‑0 in a UEFA Nations League Group A2 clash at the Allianz Arena in Munich on Thursday. Florian Wirtz’s second‑half strike sealed the win, giving the new‑look team four points and a boost in the group.

Early dominance and first goal

Germany pressed from the outset, with Aleksandr Pavlović testing the Serbian defence before Nick Woltemade’s header drifted wide in the 11th minute. Bayern Munich midfielder Tom Bischof broke the deadlock five minutes before the break, firing home his first international goal in the 39th minute. Florian Wirtz doubled the lead in the 61st minute after finding space in the box and slotting a neat finish.

Ex‑Liverpool boss Klopp’s side saw regular captain Joshua Kimmich rested after the opening two fixtures, allowing Bayern forward Serge Gnabry to wear the armband, while goalkeeper Jonas Urbig started between the posts at his home stadium. Serbia (SRB), already beaten by Greece and the Netherlands, sat deep and struggled to create clear chances, though Djordje Petrović kept them in the game with several reaction saves.

Serbia came close when Kosta Nedeljković failed to connect with a pass into the German box, and later their keeper Djordje Petrović denied both Gnabry and Wirtz with reflex saves. Despite the pressure, the visitors could not find a breakthrough, leaving the scoreline untouched until the second half.

Second‑half adjustments and final blow

At halftime, Said El Mâla replaced Gnabry, making his international debut, while the Cologne forward took the armband for the second period. Maximilian Mittelstädt surged down the left, threading a pass to Wirtz, who controlled the ball and fired into the far corner to make it 2‑0 just after the hour.

Klopp introduced Celtic midfielder Mika Baur, the 1,000th player to feature for Germany, in the closing stages, swapping him for Tom Bischof as the German side saw out the match. The win lifted Germany (GER) to four points (4 PTS) in Group A2, while Serbia remained on zero, leaving the hosts in a favourable position ahead of the next round.
