Wirtz stays in the dark at Liverpool, Rummenigge sees no Bayern return

While Florian Wirtz in his second Premier League season at Liverpool is struggling to find his footing – only one assist in six appearances – Karl‑Heinz Rummenigge says that a move to Bayern Munich for the 23‑year‑old is no longer on the table.

Rummenigge's assessment of the transfer

The 71‑year‑old Bayern legend explains that every step a player takes must be carefully considered. In the summer of 2025, Wirtz chose the move to England because of a ten‑man position promised by Arne Slot. “Honestly: yes, we were given the impression that he is going to Liverpool because the then‑coach Arne Slot promised him the ten‑man position,” Rummenigge said. He did not see financial differences as decisive.

Wirtz signed a long‑term contract until 2030, with the Reds expected to pay around €140 million to the former Leverkusen player. In his first year at Liverpool he recorded 17 goal involvements in 49 appearances, but the high expectations remained unmet.

Even in the German national team, magical moments have so far been missing, which fuels the discussion about his future. Rummenigge, however, remains convinced that a possible return to Bayern Munich is not being considered at the moment.
