Why St Gallen vs Luzern’s 'non-derby' still sets pulses racing

St Gallen and Luzern meet in the Super League on Sunday at 16:30 local time, but this fixture is no ordinary clash. The fixture carries the weight of a so-called ‘non-derby’, where geography gives way to rivalry, and the atmosphere on the pitch and in the stands is expected to be electric.

The two clubs arrive in starkly different moods. Luzern have yet to collect a point and have conceded six goals without scoring, while St Gallen sit top of the table after two rounds, twice coming from behind to secure maximum points — a feat never achieved in the first two matchdays of Super League history.

Injury has ruled out St Gallen’s first-choice goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi, yet the team’s progress has not stalled. Luzern, meanwhile, have struggled with defensive errors from new signing Simon Simoni.

The headline clash between the Owusu cousins will not take place. Enoch Owusu shone for St Gallen with two goals in his last appearance, but Tyron Owusu is suspended. The Ghana-born midfielder saw red within three minutes of Luzern’s 0-3 loss to Sion.

St Gallen’s new head coach Udo Portmann is chasing his first competitive win with the club. The technically gifted midfield pairing of Matteo Di Giusto and Leonardo Bertone, signed from Thun, has yet to make a lasting impact.

St Gallen’s strong start to the season — aside from the expected defeat to Benfica — includes four consecutive wins across all competitions. Head coach Enrico Maassen has set the tone with his golden touch.

Yet several factors favour Luzern. St Gallen’s defence has looked shaky, pushing midfielder Lukas Daschner into a defensive role. The team’s congested schedule includes gruelling European away trips. Their last home win over Luzern came three years ago, before Maassen’s arrival. All the ingredients are in place for another thrilling ‘non-derby’.

Highlights of the match will be broadcast at 19:00 on 2 August 2026 on SRF zwei.
