Why Manchester United should chase Ezri Konsa despite £60m price tag
Alan Pardew urges Manchester United (Utd) to consider a summer swoop for England centre‑back Ezri Konsa, as Arsenal’s £30m bid was rebuffed and Aston Villa hold firm on a £60m price tag for the 28‑year‑old defender who has been a mainstay at Villa since 2019.
Villa’s £60m price tag
Villa have placed a £60m price tag on Konsa. The club rejected an initial £30m offer from Arsenal. Villa’s stance reflects the defender’s role in their Europa League triumph last season, their first major trophy in 30 years. Picture: PA.
Since joining Villa from Brentford in 2019, the 28‑year‑old has become one of the most dependable central defenders in English football. He has amassed 286 appearances for the Villains across all competitions. His consistency contributed to Villa’s Europa League success.
Konsa is reported to be ‘open’ to a move to the Emirates as Arsenal search for centre‑half reinforcements ahead of their title defence. Arsenal’s interest follows their initial £30m bid being turned down. The transfer deadline is set for September 1, giving the Gunners a fortnight to submit a follow‑up offer.

Pardew backs Konsa for United
Pardew believes Konsa would fit perfectly into what Michael Carrick needs at Old Trafford, aligning with Carrick’s Manchester United requirements. He likened the defender’s set‑piece goal threat to that of United legend Steve Bruce. On talkSPORT, Pardew said, “Konsa has been mentioned with a couple of clubs. What a signing he would be for Manchester United.” Man United’s back line could be bolstered by his aerial ability.
United have also been linked with Cristian Romero, a deal Tottenham completed for £34m with Atletico Madrid. Pardew warned Carrick to stay away from Romero, describing him as a volatile character who could cause dressing‑room problems. He added that such disciplinary concerns might have influenced United’s hesitation.
Konsa still has two years remaining on his contract at Villa Park, and manager Unai Emery has urged the club to retain the English defender. If the Gunners submit a follow‑up bid, Villa will have to consider their £60m valuation. Add to United’s options, Konsa offers a dominant aerial presence and set‑piece threat to their defence.
