West Ham sidestep Salech as promotion push intensifies

West Ham entered the summer transfer window eager to give Nuno Espírito Santo a squad capable of securing promotion, having already splashed cash on Mateus Fernandes, Crysencio Summerville and El Hadji Diouf, while keeping an eye on Cardiff City striker Yousef Salech, a move owner Vincent Tan hopes to avoid missing.

Why a new striker was on the agenda

Despite the influx of new signings, the Hammers remain wary of a thin bench when the season stretches into winter. Nuno Espírito Santo has already integrated the likes of Mateus Fernandes and El Hadji Diouf, yet the forward line still lacks a true target‑man. This prompted the scouting team to monitor several Championship prospects.

Salech’s record sparked interest because he netted fourteen goals in thirty‑four League One games as Cardiff secured promotion, and earlier added eight in twenty appearances after joining the Welsh side in January. The 24‑year‑old ex‑Brondby forward combines physicality with the ability to link play, offering a focal point for any attack. His profile seemed to match the Hammers’ desire for a reliable number nine.

West Ham ultimately did not make a firm move for Salech, and club officials now say the decision feels right for the moment. Salech has scored just once in his opening six games for Cardiff, while the Hammers are already averaging over two goals a game thanks to Jarrod Bowen, Joel Piroe and others. Owner Vincent Tan will kick himself if the striker later proves decisive elsewhere.

Cardiff’s striking shortage remains

For Cardiff City, the lack of cutting‑edge finishing is a growing concern, with Salech failing to find the net in his last four outings and missing several clear chances. Manager Brian Barry‑Murphy does not appear to favour Callum Robinson as a natural number nine, and a bid to re‑sign Omari Kellyman fell short after his loan spell from Chelsea to Strasbourg. The club therefore relies heavily on Salech as their main source of goals.

The Hammers’ forward line looks set to thrive without additional signings. Jarrod Bowen continues to lead the attack, while Joel Piroe has already proved himself a guarantee by becoming the Championship’s top scorer. Divine Mukasa, Manor Solomon, Edvin Austbo and Taty Castellanos round out a versatile group that should keep West Ham competitive at the top end of the table.

Looking ahead, Cardiff may regret not bolstering Salech’s support, as his goal return at this level could improve with more service. Meanwhile, West Ham will monitor his progress but appear confident that their current striking options are sufficient for a promotion push.
