West Ham gamble £10 million on Freddie Potts’ exit to Brugge

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball ·

West Ham United are preparing for the Championship with the aim of an immediate return to the Premier League, and the loss of a home‑grown midfielder leaves a clear gap in their midfield options. Freddie Potts, 22, had been poised to become a key figure in the Hammers’ upcoming campaign.

The club have agreed to sell Potts to Belgian side Club Brugge for a £10 million fee. He has been granted permission to travel to Belgium for a medical examination ahead of the transfer next week.

Potts has been with West Ham since he was six, meaning his departure ends a 17‑year association with the London Stadium. The midfielder’s exit therefore severs a long‑standing link between the academy product and the Hammers.

Former Hammers star Kevin Nolan told Alex Crook on talkSPORT that he was ‘surprised’ by the decision, describing the sale as ‘probably a bit of a mistake’ but acknowledging it is ‘good money for Freddie’.

Ex‑striker Tony Cottee echoed the sentiment on talkSPORT Breakfast, saying ‘I don’t get it. £10 million to Brugge for a good young academy player – you could argue the club needs cash, but you should keep your academy boys.’ He also recalled Potts’ Player of the Year awards at Portsmouth and Wycombe.

Nolan highlighted that Brugge will give Potts the chance to play in European competition and that the style of play suits him, noting the Belgian side secures a midfielder who has been developed entirely within West Ham’s academy.

The £10 million fee provides West Ham with a modest cash injection, yet critics argue the club is sacrificing a home‑grown talent that could have bolstered their promotion push.

For Potts, the move promises regular first‑team football and continental exposure at Club Brugge, a step up in competitive experience.

For the Hammers, the deal balances immediate financial relief against the loss of a promising midfielder they had counted on for the season ahead.
