Vrancken says Hearts must deliver near‑perfect show to avoid Euro exit
On 20 August 2026, Hearts head coach Wouter Vrancken warned that an almost perfect performance in Austria next week is essential to avoid another Euro exit, after his side were held to a 2‑2 draw by Rapid Vienna at Tynecastle in the first leg of their UEFA Conference League play‑off.
First‑half control and chances
Rapid Vienna started stronger, controlling play and creating bigger chances, according to manager Johannes Thorup. Thorup said he was satisfied with his side’s first‑half performance, noting they had more control than Hearts.
Hearts responded after falling behind, with Josh McPake and James Wilson each scoring to put the visitors ahead 2‑1. Vrancken praised the structure but admitted the team lacked conviction and pressure in the opening period.
Second‑half drama and equaliser
In the 79th minute, Rapid’s substitute Nikolaus Wurmbrand levelled the tie, sparking a shift in momentum as the Tynecastle crowd rallied behind Hearts. Vrancken highlighted the improved second‑half spirit, while Wilson’s 30‑yard strike, described as astonishing, underscored his impact. The 19‑year‑old Scotland international, who spent the latter half of the previous season on loan with Tottenham’s under‑21 squad, celebrated the goal.
Vrancken warned that an almost perfect display in Austria next week is essential for Hearts to avoid another Euro exit and reach the UEFA Conference League group stage. He noted Rapid Vienna are warm favourites at their Allianz Stadium on Wednesday night and that his side must be at the top of their game.
Thorup expressed frustration at his team’s slow start to the second half but remained confident they can dominate the return leg at home. He said the 2‑2 result was satisfactory and that a stronger performance in their own stadium will be decisive.
The draw leaves both clubs level, with the second leg set to decide who progresses to the league phase of the competition. Hearts will now focus on delivering the near‑perfect performance Vrancken demanded in Austria.
