Vincent Janssen’s free move sparks MLS ambition for Timbers

Vincent Janssen leaves Royal Antwerp FC today at 22:42, signing a two‑year contract with the Portland Timbers in the Major League Soccer. The Dutch forward arrives on a free transfer after his contract with the Belgian club expired, embarking on an Amerikaan avontuur.

Ned Grabavoy, the Timbers’ general director, said the club is delighted to add a player of Vincent’s quality. “His experience and scoring ability will be a valuable addition to our current squad,” he explained on the club’s channel.

During his spell at the Belgian side, the 22‑time Oranje‑international became a fixture and captain, playing 173 matches for The Great Old. He recorded 64 goals and 27 assists, establishing himself as a key leader.

Janssen becomes the first Dutch player in the history of the MLS club, marking a milestone for both the Timbers and Dutch football abroad. The move also fulfills his long‑standing wish to return to the American league.

Before Antwerp, the 32‑year‑old striker featured for Monterrey, Almere City, AZ, Tottenham Hotspur and Fenerbahçe, gaining experience across several top‑flight competitions. His diverse background adds depth to the Timbers’ attacking options.

Janssen had previously expressed a desire to play again in MLS, and the free transfer now makes that dream a reality. The Dutch forward’s arrival is expected to boost the Timbers’ offensive firepower for the upcoming season.
