VAR retake fuels United comeback, buying Carrick a lifeline

When VAR official Carlos del Cerro Grande signalled a retake after Bryan Cristante's foot brushed the Roma penalty area, Bruno Fernandes stepped up again at Old Trafford and scored, sparking Manchester United's turnaround. The decision came with United trailing 2‑0 and the Roma crowd celebrating, turning what looked like a night of disaster into a potential lifeline for Michael Carrick.

At half‑time United were two goals down, a deficit that had already drawn criticism from former United stars Wayne Rooney and Nicky Butt, who were commentating for Amazon Prime. The situation felt reminiscent of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's own half‑time dismissal in September 2023, when United were also two goals behind at Vicarage Road and Carrick, then a coach on Solskjaer's bench, watched a 4‑1 loss.

Carrick's half‑time message and player reactions

"At half‑time, I was wanting them to be more positive if anything, and not get too disappointed and frustrated," said Michael Carrick, adding that dwelling on disappointment would not help anyone. Former striker Wayne Rooney later praised Carrick, saying he deserved a lot of credit for the halftime talk that changed the team's belief. Carrick also explained his calm after the missed first penalty, noting it felt like "another moment" and commending Bruno for his composure on the double‑take.

In the final seven minutes Matheus Cunha struck twice, completing the comeback and delivering United's first win in ten matches, even though he was sent off shortly afterwards, leaving a nervy finish. The win gave Man United a morale boost heading into the next league fixture.

Before kick‑off and during the first half, "green and gold" chants targeted the Glazer family, minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and director of football Jason Wilcox, underscoring ongoing discontent despite the victory. United had previously rallied to beat Atalanta 3‑2 at Old Trafford under Solskjaer, only to lose 5‑0 to Liverpool four days later, a defeat that preceded Solskjaer's dismissal within a month. A similar rescue occurred in October 2018 when Jose Mourinho, then under pressure, saw United overturn a 2‑0 deficit against Newcastle, extending his tenure by thirteen games.

Carrick admitted he cannot predict how long the win will protect his job, saying he has no crystal ball and that United now turn their focus to a crucial weekend clash with Aston Villa. Chief executive Omar Berrada and director Jason Wilcox appeared noticeably relieved after the result.
